Catalogue note
May 2003, Vol. 2 Issue 1 of Dazed & Confused, fronted by Pharrell Williams under the cover line “King of the Beats”. The issue captures Pharrell at the point when his work with The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. was making the producer increasingly visible as a cultural figure in his own right. Its principal stories also look backward and forward across Black Atlantic and technological culture: a Soul II Soul history, William Gibson discussing the contemporary future, and Pharrell in conversation with Roy Ayers. Streetwear and fashion editorials sit alongside that music/design material, making the issue a dense early-2000s record of the overlap between hip hop production, British club heritage, speculative culture and style publishing.
Why this object matters
The Pharrell/Roy Ayers exchange, Soul II Soul history and Gibson contribution give the new-volume launch substantive Black Atlantic and technological context. Retain Gold at 9.0 for those contents as well as the bibliographic transition.
Evidence limits: Complete — all pages/components present under the standing TMR completeness rule; no missing issued insert, wrap, supplement, poster, disc or other component has been reported.
