Biography
Person.
Rankin, born John Rankin Waddell in 1966, is a British photographer, publisher and film director whose career has made the magazine itself an active platform for cultural production rather than merely a container for images. After turning from accountancy to photography, he co-founded Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack in the early 1990s and became the publication’s first photographic editor.
Across hundreds of editorials, Rankin helped establish a direct, collaborative visual language that placed musicians, models, artists and ordinary young people inside the same field of attention, while the magazine expanded the possibilities of independently produced British style publishing. He later co-founded AnOther and AnOther Man, launched Hunger and developed an extensive practice in portraiture, advertising, music video and film, photographing figures ranging from David Bowie and Kate Moss to Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.
