Catalogue note
The twelfth and final issue of Willy Vanderperre’s /12 single-model publication series, devoted entirely to Anok Yai and published by IDEA in 2018. The object is an austere monochrome portrait publication built around close, tactile studies of Yai’s face and skin, with almost no editorial apparatus beyond the /12 title, authorship, publisher statement and acknowledgements. It appeared in the same year Yai became the first Black model to open a Prada show since Naomi Campbell in 1997; British Vogue also records that her first Prada campaign was photographed by Vanderperre. As a result, Anok /12 captures photographer and subject at a very early, culturally consequential point in Yai’s career rather than as a retrospective portrait.
Credit / attribution note: Front title reads “Anok /12”; rear states “© Willy Vanderperre 2018. Published by IDEA.” The interior acknowledgements page reads “ANOK by willy vanderperre” and thanks Anok Yai, Olivier Rizzo, Ashley Brokaw, Anthony Turner, Samuel Ellis Scheinman, Roman Dubus, Theo Sion, Bert Jorisens, Oliver Grognard, Phoebe Brown, Esther Langham, Dominik Pollin, Stephanie Bailly, Elisa Ellenbach and Maxime Miller; “turtle neck: prada s/s 2017” is also printed. These acknowledgements are preserved without assigning unprinted production roles.
Why this object matters
The terminal /12 publication is a focused Vanderperre/Yai collaboration from early in Yai's career, with a distinctive monochrome material treatment. Its inclusion in later discussion of Vanderperre's practice strengthens the artistic case without converting a final sequence number alone into Gold.
Evidence limits: Complete under the standing TMR books/publications completeness rule. The supplied photographs show front cover, rear cover and an interior acknowledgements/image spread; no missing issued component has been reported or evidenced.
