Catalogue note

The third issue of Marvel UK's original Death's Head solo series, cover-dated February 1989 and released on 17 January 1989. “High Stakes” continues Simon Furman and Bryan Hitch's early development of the freelance peacekeeping agent after the first two issues established his solo format. The comic is part of Marvel UK's late-1980s push into original British-created science-fiction properties presented in an American comic-book format. Preserved alongside the preceding Death's Head issues and TMR's Dragon's Claws material, it strengthens a coherent record of that short-lived but influential publishing experiment.

Writer: Simon Furman — “High Stakes”

Artist: Bryan Hitch — pencils; David Hine — inks; Nick Abadzis — colours; Annie Parkhouse — letters

Cover: Bryan Hitch — pencils; Mark Farmer — inks

Edition: Original 1988–89 Marvel UK first-printing issue; UK 55p / US $1.75 / CAN $2.25 multi-price cover

Why this object matters

High Stakes preserves the early Furman/Hitch series in original form and strengthens the consecutive held run. Its role is strong artistic and serial documentation, with less distinct crossover or publication significance than the preceding issue; 8.2 is proportionate.

Evidence limits: Apparently intact from the supplied front and rear covers, but interior pagination has not been physically collated. Grand Comics Database catalogues the issue as 28 pages. No separate free gift or premium has been established for this issue.
