Catalogue note
Original British Picturegoer Weekly No. 340 (New Series), Vol. 7, dated 27 November 1937, with Sigrid Gurie on the colour cover beneath the line “Sex Appeal Gets an Accent”. Inside, the striking “Sex Appeal Goes Continental” spread presents Hollywood’s current appetite for European stars as a ‘foreign invasion’, profiling and picturing performers from France, Hungary, Italy and Scandinavia. The feature is a particularly revealing document of how nationality, accent, glamour and female desirability were packaged together in late-1930s star publicity.
