Catalogue note
British wartime issue of Picturegoer, week ending 9 December 1944, with Betty Grable on the colour cover. Inside, the magazine praises Crown Film Unit’s Western Approaches as a major British film achievement, stressing its Technicolor photography, real Atlantic convoy conditions and use of serving seamen rather than professional actors. The same spread places this documentary culture beside star publicity for Judy Garland and Madonna of the Seven Moons. The facing page and rear advertising add unusually rich home-front evidence: Ministry of Food Christmas cooking guidance, a National Savings Committee appeal, cosmetics, toiletries and hygiene products all show how entertainment, wartime duty and consumer life coexisted on the same pages.
