Catalogue note

Original Orange flyer for Hippodrome IX, held on Bank Holiday Sunday 30 May 1993 from 9pm to 7am. The bill brings together Grooverider, Ray Keith, Rat Pack, Fabio, Randall, Squirrel, Hype and DMS. Its front transforms Orange's established sunglasses mascot into a circus ringmaster presiding over orange lions, making this one of the more narratively developed examples of the promoter's mascot-led graphic language.

Advertised programme: Grooverider; Ray Keith; Rat Pack; Fabio; Randall; Squirrel; Hype; DMS

Graphic-design significance: The front is unusually illustration-led: Orange's sunglasses-wearing mascot is recast as a circus ringmaster surrounded by performing orange lions on podiums, while the reverse reduces the event to oversized typography and the numeral 9. The visual pun converts the promoter's fruit mascot into a full Hippodrome/circus narrative.

Historical context: London Museum records Orange as one of London's successful rave operations by 1992 and notes that its Camden Palace success led to Orange nights at the Hippodrome. Specialist flyer archive Dankew independently lists this event as 30 May 1993, Hippodrome IX.

Production note: Full-colour illustrated front; typographic reverse. Exact print process and stock not established.

Condition note: Very Good appearance, ungraded. Light handling/edge wear and small puncture/staple holes visible; strong colour and complete legibility.

Confidence / uncertainty: Date and sequence number are verified. No artist/designer signature or printed design credit has been identified on the supplied views; artist remains unresolved rather than inferred.
