Catalogue note

An original long-format, purple-on-white flyer for four 'Big Hard Love Ranch — A Right Royal Rocker' Saturday nights at Maximus, 14 Leicester Square, London, 8–29 February 1992 (year strongly inferred but not printed). The February 15 bill unites Manchester DJ Justin Robertson and a live appearance advertised as Mr Fingers/Larry Heard with singer Robert Owens—Chicago-house pioneers, recalled in retrospect by resident Al Mackenzie. Elsewhere the month brings Lisa Loud and The Sex Gods, Darren Emerson/Choci and The Tartan Army, and Danny Rampling with Fuzzy Logic. The flyer retains £10, 11pm–6am, four resident DJs and provocative countercultural artwork using a crowned royal figure, a swastika emblem and a grenade. First-person histories date Love Ranch to 1991–93. Blank reverse has apparent old mounting marks. Strong interlinked historic and visual significance.

Advertised programme: 8 Feb: Lisa Loud / LIVE The Sex Gods. 15 Feb: Justin Robertson / LIVE Mr Fingers (Larry Heard) / Robert Owens. 22 Feb: Darren 'Emmerson' [sic; DJ Darren Emerson] / Choci / LIVE Tartan Army. 29 Feb: Danny Rampling / LIVE Fuzzy Logic. Resident DJs: Al Mackenzie, Rad Rice, Andy Smythe and James White. 'Mr Fingers' and 'Larry Heard' refer to one person; all attendance is billed rather than proved.

Graphic-design significance: Memorable constrained-colour and long-format typographic statement: oversized oblique/deconstructed purple 'love ranch', 'BIG HARD' and 'A RIGHT ROYAL ROCKER'; halftone image of a crowned royal figure whose crown bears a swastika symbol, adjacent grenade graphic, and rigid column of four Saturdays. This appears to quote punk/post-punk appropriation tactics. No intended ideological position or designer identity is assumed; preserve the visible imagery unaltered as historic source material.

Historical context: Love Ranch at Maximus, 14 Leicester Square ran weekly from August 1991 to spring 1993 according to resident/booker Rad Rice's 1996 interview (republished 2018). He describes promoters Sean McLusky and artist Mark Wigan, resident DJs himself and Al Mackenzie, guest Danny Rampling and unusual theatrical live performances. Al Mackenzie separately recalls a memorable live set featuring Mr Fingers and Robert Owens at Love Ranch, while the flyer bills them on 15 February. Mr Fingers is Chicago deep-house pioneer Larry Heard's alias; Owens was his collaborator in Fingers Inc. The flyer also advertises The Sex Gods, Tartan Army and Fuzzy Logic as live acts, and puts Darren Emerson on 22 February. Maximus later hosted Mark Wigan's Club the Gnome in 1993, already represented by TMR-000396.

Production note: Deep violet/purple ink on light paper/card, large slanted sans-serif text with screened/halftone royal figure. Commercial reproduction method and stock unverified.

Condition note: Good / Good+ based only on photographs. The striking purple print remains clear and largely saturated; corners show small softening and edge rubbing. Blank reverse has conspicuous suspected old adhesive/tape/album-mount remnants or discoloured rectangular patches at upper corners and lower edge, with smudges, print show-through and some handling/creasing. Small scuffs/marks also visible on the printed face. Not Near Mint; actual adhered material not physically confirmed.

Confidence / uncertainty: Physically verified month/day pattern 8/15/22/29, every Saturday, Maximus address, £10 entry, 11pm–6am, date-specific advertised lineups and listed resident DJs; year is NOT printed. 1992 is strongly corroborated by leap-day weekday pattern combined with firsthand dating of the club (1991–93). Mr Fingers and Larry Heard are SAME person; printed 'Darren Emmerson' is likely variant/misspelling of Darren Emerson corroborated by named Love Ranch alumni. Al Mackenzie's live recollection does not supply exact 15 February date. Allegorical/punk political imagery is visible but artist and intention unverified. Provenance, print run and market value unknown.
