David Bowie (1947–2016) was a British singer, songwriter and actor who made changes of sound, costume and persona part of the work itself. Born David Robert Jones in Brixton, he reached a wider audience with Space Oddity in 1969 and developed the Ziggy Stardust character in 1972. His later recordings moved through soul, electronic experimentation and pop, with collaborators including Tony Visconti and Brian Eno.
Bowie’s visual identity was produced through close exchanges with photographers, designers and filmmakers. Stage clothes, portraits, record sleeves and promotional images gave each period a distinct public presence. His leading role in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) extended that practice into cinema.
