Catalogue note
Third issue of The Face, dated July 1980, with Bryan Ferry photographed by Sheila Rock on the cover. The issue combines a Ferry interview with The Stranglers, The Beat, John Cooper Clarke, The Cramps, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Magazine and a David Bowie photo feature, while the contents also document The Pretenders, Ian Curtis, Terry Hall, Ian Dury, Motown, Julien Temple, Toyah Willcox and Debbie Harry. As an object made only two months after The Face launched, it captures the magazine while its defining synthesis of music journalism, portrait photography, post-punk culture and visual style was still being formed.
Why this object matters
The Ferry/Rock issue combines Linton Kwesi Johnson, early post-punk and documented Curtis-related contents at the publication’s formation. A modest increase reflects the breadth and contemporaneity, without inventing the nature of the Curtis feature.
