Catalogue note
May 1983 third-birthday issue of The Face, No. 37, with David Bowie photographed by Tony McGee beneath the lines 'Cool, Calm + Collectable' and 'Three years of The Face celebrated in style'. The Bowie Face Interview sits alongside Michael Caine, Tracey Ullman, Gene Anthony Ray, John Waters, Spandau Ballet, a Bob Marley/Jamaica feature, Jon Savage, Robert Elms and fashion material. Published immediately after Bowie's April 1983 release of Let's Dance, the issue captures the magazine at a formative Neville Brody-era moment while documenting Bowie's return to mass pop visibility. The rear Paul Haig 'Heaven Sent' advertisement preserves a tightly contemporary example of the independent/post-punk record culture circulating through The Face.
Why this object matters
The Let’s Dance-era Bowie interview and the wider film, Jamaica and fashion contents make an outstanding 1983 editorial object. Its third-birthday framing adds context but does not independently require Gold.
