Biography

Person.

Sheila Rock is an American-born photographer who found herself close to the action when punk and post-punk were reshaping London. Her informal portraits of the Clash, Generation X and many others captured not just performers, but the clubs, clothes and restless social world around them.

Work for The Face launched her professional career, followed by fashion, music and cultural commissions for magazines and institutions including the Royal Opera House, the Royal Ballet and the Barbican. Her books range from Punk+ and New Romantics to Sera: The Way of the Tibetan Monk and Tough & Tender.

Whatever the setting, Rock’s photographs favour presence over polish: people look like they have lives beyond the frame.
