Biography
Person.
Jamie Hewlett is a British artist, designer and visual storyteller whose career has moved freely between comics, music, animation and gallery work. He first came to prominence in the late 1980s as the co-creator and artist of Tank Girl, whose anarchic mixture of punk graphics, fashion, pop-culture parody and comic-book excess became closely associated with the British magazine Deadline. Hewlett later co-created Gorillaz with Damon Albarn, developing the animated band’s characters and visual world into an unusually sustained collaboration between illustration, music, video, performance and digital media.
His broader work has ranged from record sleeves and character design to opera, exhibitions and large-scale art projects, while retaining a recognisable appetite for collage, genre collision and irreverent drawing. He received the Design Museum’s Designer of the Year award in 2006 for his work on Gorillaz.
