Pavement Licker: Whet Your Appetite

Issues 1–10 · 2003–2017 · first edition · original silver-stamped run · Josh Jones / James-Lee Duffy

27 July 2017 · ★ Gold Star object

A first-edition, original silver-stamped hardback compendium gathering the first ten issues of Pavement Licker, the independent London art zine founded in 2003 by graphic artist James-Lee Duffy and writer/editor Josh Jones. The book preserves fourteen years of black-and-white underground art, illustration, writing and street-art culture in a single self-published object. Contemporary coverage explicitly framed it as a snapshot of the rise of the street-art scene, with contributors ranging from unknown and emerging creatives to Banksy, Jamie Hewlett, David Shrigley, Pure Evil, Shepard Fairey and Aries Moross. The copy's FIRST EDITION stamp and silver cover state are materially important because a later sold-out reprint was specifically promoted as gold.

Catalogue note

First-edition retrospective of the first ten issues of the fiercely independent London art zine Pavement Licker, documenting underground illustration and street-art culture from 2003 to 2017 and reproducing work by established and emerging contributors including Banksy, Jamie Hewlett, David Shrigley, Pure Evil and Aries Moross.

Credit / attribution note: Created and self-published by Pavement Licker co-founders James-Lee Duffy and Josh Jones. The catalogue records contributions by Banksy, Jamie Hewlett, Naughty James, Spencer Wilson, David Shrigley, Andrew Welland, Paul Camo, Miles Donovan, Anthony Ellis, Andy/Andrew MacGregor, Holly Wales, Kate Moross, Pure Evil and others. Naughty James is the creative credit of Craig Hanel-Thomson. Primary Pavement Licker sources identify ORKO as James-Lee Duffy’s street-art name. Kate Moross is the historical publication credit of the creator now known as Aries Moross. We Are Shadows is Duffy’s studio.

Edition / bibliographic note: This physical copy carries a PAVEMENT LICKER FIRST EDITION stamp and silver/grey metallic cover lettering. Josh Jones later announced a short-run reprint with the phrase 'THIS TIME IT'S GOOOOLD!', supporting a high-confidence attribution of this silver-stamped copy to the original first run. No numerical print-run size is claimed.

Preserved discrepancies / uncertainties: The cloth front reads 'WHET YOUR APETITE' with one P in APETITE, while contemporary launch coverage and creator pages use the conventional title 'Whet Your Appetite'. Contemporary 2017 sources and Josh Jones's own book page give 518 pages; a 2020 Verdant interview says 568. Its Nice That gives a 27 July 2017 launch; one Huck footer says 27 June despite the article being dated 24 July. TMR preserves the discrepancies and uses the primary 27 July evidence.

Research status: Core identity, first-edition state, 2017 launch, self-published status, issues 1–10 coverage, 518-page contemporary specification, contributor context and later gold reprint state researched 26 Aug 2026. Exact first-run print quantity is not established and is not inferred.

Why this object matters

The first silver-stamped compendium preserves the first ten Pavement Licker issues as a creator-led record of independent illustration and street-art publishing. Threshold Gold recognises that concentrated documentary contribution; 9.4 gave excessive weight to contributor fame and first-run status without corresponding evidence of foundational impact.

Evidence limits: Complete under the standing TMR books/publications rule. Front and rear boards, first-edition stamp and closing acknowledgements/support page are photographed; no missing issued component has been reported or evidenced.
