Biography
Person.
Boy George is a British singer, songwriter, DJ and visual personality whose emergence with Culture Club made questions of style, gender presentation and pop identity inseparable from the band’s musical success. Born George O’Dowd in 1961, he became one of the defining faces of early-1980s British pop as Culture Club combined soul, reggae, new wave and radio-friendly songwriting with an image built around George’s elaborate make-up, hats and deliberately androgynous presentation.
Songs including Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon carried that image onto television screens around the world during the era of early MTV. His later career has included solo music, DJ work, writing, theatre and visual art, extending the same interest in self-invention beyond the original Culture Club moment.
