Ray Petri was a stylist whose work for The Face recast men’s fashion through a mixture of sportswear, tailoring, military surplus and street-derived reference. Around him gathered the west London creative network known as Buffalo, including designers, models and image-makers who collaborated across editorial shoots.
Petri’s partnership with photographer Jamie Morgan produced images that challenged established codes of masculinity and widened the visibility of Black models within British fashion publishing. The National Portrait Gallery identifies their January 1984 Nick Kamen cover as a defining moment in the magazine’s history.
