Read the catalogue note →March 1985 issue of The Face, commonly known as the ‘Hard’ issue, featuring 12-year-old Felix Howard in the now-iconic Buffalo cover image photographed by Jamie Morgan and styled by Ray Petri. The issue combines the Buffalo movement’s influential street-derived fashion language with features on Sam Shepard, Jessica Lange, The Pogues, Japanese design, Alison Moyet, Andy Warhol, Dennis Skinner and Lovers Rock. It is a particularly important surviving example of The Face at the point when its photography, styling and graphic design were actively redefining British visual culture.
The Morgan/Petri Felix Howard cover is a defining Buffalo image preserved in its original magazine setting. London College of Fashion’s exhibition account explicitly discusses this cover, supporting Gold at 9.4. Sources differ on the model’s age, which should remain qualified.
