Biography
Person.
Jean-Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer whose career has been built on treating established codes of dress as material to be inverted, mixed and made socially visible. Self-taught rather than fashion-school trained, he began his own label in 1976 and quickly developed a practice in which punk, sailors, corsetry, street casting, gender ambiguity and couture technique could occupy the same runway.
Gaultier repeatedly brought garments normally hidden or restricted by convention into public view: corsets became outerwear, skirts entered menswear and bodies excluded from conventional fashion imagery were made central to his shows. His later work with Madonna, particularly the cone-bra corsets associated with the Blond Ambition era, carried those ideas into global pop culture, while his first haute couture collection in 1997 formalised a long-running dialogue between subculture and high fashion.
