Biography
Person.
John Workman is an American comics letterer, writer, artist and editor whose hand is often hiding in plain sight. He has worked across almost every part of a comic’s production—lettering, drawing, inking, colouring, design and editorial—during a career spanning more than five decades.
His lettering is especially distinctive. Balloons, captions, sound effects and ruled lines are treated as part of the drawing, shaping pace and atmosphere instead of simply sitting on top of the art.
Workman has also created independent comics including Wild Things and written and drawn Sindy, Fallen Angels and Roma. Once you recognise the balance and movement of his pages, “just the lettering” no longer seems like a small contribution.
