The Creative Act
A Way of Being
17 January 2023
Rick Rubin's book on creative practice is also a deliberately reduced design object. Its exposed cloth case, sparse geometry and restrained typography emerged from a documented design process in which Rubin made the final choices with advice and facilitation from Pentagram's Paula Scher and team.

Catalogue note
A culturally prominent book on creativity by an influential music producer whose physical design was itself authored as part of the creative statement. Pentagram's documentation makes the Rubin/Scher design process unusually well evidenced.
Credit / attribution note: Copyright page credits “Book design by Rick Rubin with special thanks to Pentagram.” Pentagram's Paula Scher records that Rubin made the design choices, with Scher and team facilitating and advising.
Edition / bibliographic note: Canongate lists the hardback as first published 17 January 2023. This copy's copyright page carries a standalone “12” in the normal impression position; it is catalogued as the twelfth impression rather than a first printing.
Condition note: White/grey cloth remains clean overall with light handling and modest compression/rubbing at extremities. Printed black graphics are strong; sampled interior is clean and ribbon marker is present.
Preserved discrepancies / uncertainties: The standalone “12” is treated as the impression indicator; the supplied copyright page does not show a conventional descending printer's key.
Research status: Copy-specific format and impression evidence verified from user-supplied photographs. Publication date, ISBN, 432-page extent and 162 × 222 mm dimensions were verified to Canongate; design authorship/process was verified to Pentagram on 15 August 2026.
Why this object matters
The twelfth impression preserves the deliberately authored cloth-and-geometry design documented by Scher and Rubin. Its design-process evidence supports a strong contextual object, while the widely distributed later impression has no separate first-publication significance.
Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
