Catalogue note
The Face No. 19, November 1981, with Julian Cope on the cover under “True Confessions”. The issue is a dense early document of post-punk and new-pop culture: Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, Barney Bubbles, Pete Shelley, Bow Wow Wow, the emerging New Psychedelia and a seven-page “Punk Rock: Five Years On” retrospective sit alongside fashion and early Bowie material. The cover appeared at the moment Julian Cope and The Teardrop Explodes were moving from the breakthrough success of “Reward” and Kilimanjaro into the darker second album Wilder. The rear HMV advertisement for Godley + Creme’s Ismism is similarly contemporary with that album’s original chart run.
Why this object matters
The substantial five-years-on punk retrospective and Barney Bubbles coverage add specific design and self-historicisation value to the Cope-era music document. Increase modestly to outstanding 8.9, without treating a retrospective as contemporary 1976 evidence.
Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
Score and assessment method
Archive Importance: 8.9 / 10.
This is a curatorial judgement, not a measurement accurate to one tenth or a market valuation. Read the explanation and its evidence limits together.
