The Complete Little Nemo 1905–1909

Winsor McCay · edited by Alexander Braun · 2016 TASCHEN XL English-language split-volume reissue · ISBN 978-3-8365-6310-9

2016

A physically imposing TASCHEN reissue of Winsor McCay’s foundational Little Nemo newspaper work, presenting 220 dream-strip Sunday pages from 1905–1909 at near-poster scale alongside Alexander Braun’s illustrated historical study. This specific object is the 2016 English-language XL split-volume reissue, not the 2014 original TASCHEN complete edition: the imprint itself explicitly preserves that distinction.

Catalogue note

Large-format chronological presentation of 220 Little Nemo Sunday pages from 1905–1909, accompanied by Alexander Braun’s substantial illustrated historical essay. The format preserves far more of the visual scale, page architecture and colour impact of McCay’s original newspaper work than ordinary compact reprints.

Credit / attribution note: Supplied imprint credits project management to Martin Holz and Florian Kobler; production to Daniela Amato and Horst Neuzner; art direction to Josh Baker; design and layout to Anna-Tina Kessler; English translation to Hayley Blair Haupt. These production credits are preserved as printed without assigning additional roles not stated on the object.

Edition / bibliographic note: The supplied imprint states ©2016 TASCHEN GmbH and explicitly notes 'Original edition: ©2014 TASCHEN GmbH'. Specialist cataloguing describes this 2016/17 issue as a split-volume reissue of the earlier complete TASCHEN edition; a companion 1910–1927 volume followed later. TMR therefore does not call this the first edition of TASCHEN’s project.

Condition note: Front remains bright and highly presentable. Visible shelf/handling wear includes bumped and rubbed corners, wear at the spine ends and board edges, plus scattered marks/soiling and scuffing on the pale rear board, with the lower-right rear corner notably bumped. The photographed acknowledgements/imprint spread is clean and legible.

Preserved discrepancies / uncertainties: Exact retail on-sale date varies by market: some catalogues give late 2016 while others list January/February 2017. The physical book itself fixes the publication state at ©2016. Some secondary listings loosely call this a first edition; the imprint itself explicitly identifies an original 2014 TASCHEN edition, so TMR treats the present copy as a 2016 split-volume reissue.

Research status: Exact ISBN, 2016 imprint, 368-page extent and edition relationship to the 2014 original verified. No printing-number statement is visible; no unsupported first-impression claim is made.

Why this object matters

The large-page chronological reproduction and Braun's contextual essay preserve McCay's page architecture more effectively than compact reprints. This is outstanding reference and reproduction value, while the 2016 split-volume reissue is kept distinct from original newspapers and the 2014 complete project.

Evidence limits: Complete under the standing TMR books/publications completeness rule. Front cover, rear cover and final acknowledgements/imprint material are supplied; no missing issued component has been reported or evidenced.
