Ministry of Sound · 3 November 1994 · jungle compilation/label launch · DAVE N graffiti artwork and three rooms
Thursday 3 November 1994 · 10pm–4am · ★ Gold Star object
Original artist-attributed AWOL 'A Way of Life' flyer for Thursday 3 November 1994, 10pm–4am, Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, celebrating Jungle Massive Collective 2 and launch of Unity Records. Reverse lists Main Room Micky Finn, Randall, Kenny Ken, Darren Jay, Dr S Gachet and MC GQ; five Main Bar DJs led by Roy the Roach, and four VIP Bar DJs. The vividly multicoloured graffiti Jungle Massive 2 cover was designed by DAVE N according to an independently photographed exact-copy archive; no full maker identity established. A contemporary Mission magazine advertisement verifies the combined label/compilation AWOL event; the 1994 Labello/PWL Jungle Massive album entered UK Compilations Chart at No.35 on 13 November, and Unity's 1994 UNITY001 record corroborates period activity. Exceptional graphic, music-industry, artist-network and London club archival significance.

Catalogue note
Original artist-attributed AWOL 'A Way of Life' flyer for Thursday 3 November 1994, 10pm–4am, Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, celebrating Jungle Massive Collective 2 and launch of Unity Records. Exceptional graphic, music-industry, artist-network and London club archival significance.
Advertised programme: MAIN ROOM: MICKEY FINN (canonical Micky Finn), RANDALL, KENNY KEN, DARREN JAY, DR. S. GACHET and MC G.Q. MAIN BAR: ROY THE ROACH, RICHIE FINGERS, TONY TRAX, LAURENCE BAGNELL, TOMMY COCKLES. VIP BAR: DEAN LAMBERT, MARK WRIGHT, THE HERMIT and DEREK PATTERSON. These are original advertised bookings, not independently confirmed actual appearances.
Graphic-design significance: One of the strongest cross-media graphic design pieces in this intake: exuberant red/orange/green layered graffiti JUNGLE MASSIVE 2 poster art with illustrated DJ and turntable/speaker objects, emphatically contrasted with almost corporate chrome/silver AWOL lettering, squared layout and black/red room listings. Identified designer DAVE N by original specialist archive; also credited on separate 1995 Jungle Massive flyer, indicating historic visual practice. Unity and Labello Blanco original record-label emblems coexist but aren't conflated. Exact artist personal identity and printer unknown.
Historical context: AWOL began at London's Paradise Club in 1992, moved through SW1 and then hosted events at Ministry of Sound. In a first-person 2022 Goat Shed interview, resident Darren Jay identifies founders and nucleus Micky Finn, Randall, Kenny Ken, Dr S Gachet, MC GQ, later Darren and Fearless, and names house-room Roy the Roach, Tony Trax and Tommy Cockles. His broad recollection associates Ministry expansion with around 1995–96; original 3 November 1994 handbill and contemporary Mission music advertisement provide direct earlier event evidence, which must be retained rather than rewriting date to fit recollection. Period magazine advert promotes 1994 Jungle Massive Collective 2 as a Labello/PWL double-LP with 16 tracks and double-CD with 20 tracks, plus Dr S Gachet mixtape. Separate discographies document vinyl HF43 and CD HFCD43. Official chart shows new No.35 compilation entry 13 November 1994. UK 1994 Unity Records jungle imprint catalogued first Drumdriver UNITY001 record. This is NOT the later 1995 'AWOL Live at the Ministry' album.
Production note: Multi-colour commercial printed art and chrome-looking reversed text; process, coatings, paper quality and weight unverified.
Condition note: Very Good photographic assessment. Deep black/silver reverse and saturated orange/green graffiti are substantially intact and legible with minor scattered rub/speck marks, gentle corner and edge handling. No large tear, missing paper, pinhole, tape, substantial staining or major fold visible. Not Mint; tactile examination and exact paper size not performed.
Confidence / uncertainty: PHYSICAL/VERIFIED: original AWOL branding, full November 3 1994 date and 10pm–4am hours, Gaunt Street venue, both named launches, Labello Blanco and Unity graphic marks and complete three-area roster. INDEPENDENT/VERIFIED: exact-date other flyer and designer DAVE N (Phatmedia); period Mission advert; chart entry/record metadata, 1994 Unity001 record; Darren Jay first-person history. QUALIFIED: artwork tiny signature doesn't reveal full artist identity; compilation charting doesn't prove the event's causal sales impact; 1995/96 recollection approximate, while flyer is 1994; production/attendance/printing/market rarity unknown.
