Image Comics

American comic-book publisher founded in 1992 by seven prominent artists around a creator-owned publishing model.

Overview

Image Comics

Image Comics was founded on 1 February 1992 by Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino. Its founding challenge to the dominant work-for-hire model allowed creators to retain ownership and control of their properties, helping reshape the economics and culture of mainstream American comics.

Why it matters

Image matters to TMR both for the objects it publishes and for the larger history it represents: creator ownership, independent production at commercial scale and new visual identities in post-1990 American comics.
