Biography
Person.
Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was a British writer and journalist whose creation of James Bond turned the contemporary spy thriller into one of the most durable transmedia franchises of the twentieth century. Drawing on wartime intelligence experience, journalism, travel and a sharp eye for products and social ritual, Fleming introduced Bond in Casino Royale in 1953 and followed it with a sequence of novels and short stories that combined Cold War geopolitics with gambling, food, cars, weapons, luxury and violence. Dr. No, published in 1958, became the source for the first Eon Productions Bond film in 1962 and helped establish the cinematic formula through which the character reached a vastly larger international audience. Fleming also wrote non-Bond work including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Diamond Smugglers and Thrilling Cities.
