Biography
Person.
Mike Laye's photography connects British music, magazine portraiture and performance. Before establishing his photographic career, he directed the ICA Theatre in London and helped promote early appearances by the Clash in 1976. He later photographed the group through a period of major personnel changes in 1983.
Laye was among the photographers included in The Photographers' Gallery's 1985 exhibition 5 Years With The Face. Its accompanying text drew on his account of the move from location photography towards more deliberately constructed studio images of musicians. His work also extended to performance photography, including images of Rose English's Walks on Water in 1988.
