Biography

Person.

Kenneth Anger (1927–2023) was an American experimental filmmaker and author whose short films brought together music, homoerotic imagery and occult symbolism. Raised in Southern California, he became known through Fireworks (1947), followed by works including Eaux d’Artifice, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, Scorpio Rising and Lucifer Rising.

His use of montage, popular music and stylised subcultural imagery influenced later filmmakers and music-video practice. He also wrote Hollywood Babylon and its sequel, books that mixed film-industry scandal with rumour and unreliable anecdote. Eaux d’Artifice and Scorpio Rising were selected for the United States National Film Registry.
