Catalogue note
July 1983 issue of The Face, No. 39, built around a New Order exclusive under the cover line 'No Hiding Place', with Stephen Morris photographed by Kevin Cummins. The contents place the band alongside Billy Connolly, D-Train, Terry Hall, Tracey Thorn, Kenneth Anger, Robert Wyatt, Julie Burchill, Russian television, street hockey and high-street fashion. The issue is a particularly strong document of The Face's early-1980s fusion of post-punk music, fashion, film and graphic design. Its rear cover preserves a contemporary Koyaanisqatsi advertisement naming Francis Ford Coppola, filmmaker Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass, extending the object into contemporaneous experimental-film culture.
Why this object matters
Cummins’s New Order image and the Anger/Wyatt/Thorn contents, with the Koyaanisqatsi advertisement, create an outstanding post-punk and experimental-film document. The original issue retains 8.8 for this specific combination.
Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
