Madonna and Steven Meisel in print

Madonna and Steven Meisel connect these objects directly, but the publication forms ask different things of photography. A magazine cover introduces an issue; SEX builds a book, sound recording and unconventional package around a larger project. This pair does not establish identical images or a continuous collaboration between the two dates.

The magazine cover

The February 1985 Face uses Meisel’s Madonna photograph under Fast! — Madonna Stops at Nothing. The portrait belongs to an issue containing other music, film and design coverage. Its meaning includes that editorial setting as well as the photographed subject.

The publication as a package

The first UK SEX edition retains its silver Mylar wrapper, Erotic CD and bound-in comic. Meisel’s photography and Fabien Baron’s design belong to this project’s specific credits. The surviving components let the archive compare the material experience of the book with the earlier magazine cover.
