Photography and youth culture

Magazine images bring several kinds of work together. The person in the photograph, the photographer and the stylist each have a different relationship to the surviving object. This route moves from an early i-D cover and interior spread to The Face, keeping those distinctions visible. It also asks how the cover image and the photographs inside can tell different stories about the same issue.

A cover and an interior appearance

i-D identifies the cover model as Jones, photographed by Thomas Degen. Separately, Isaac Julien identifies himself with Joey Attawia in the issue’s Pull a Muscle spread. These are two distinct connections: Degen’s cover photography and Julien’s appearance inside the magazine.

Photography, styling and casting

Jamie Morgan photographed Nick Kamen for the Winter Sports cover, styled by Ray Petri. Looking at the three contributions together gives a more precise account of the image than a list of names alone. Follow the individual biographies to explore their other catalogue connections.

Look beyond the cover

Patsy Kensit appears on the cover of this August 1991 issue, photographed by Andrew Macpherson. Inside, Corinne Day’s Borneo story features Kate Moss. The issue provides a clear reason to distinguish a cover credit from an interior editorial when searching for a photographer or subject.
