Grime: records, television and the printed page

The records preserve a physical means of circulating music; the magazines preserve ways of describing a developing scene. Read these objects together to compare those functions. The connection does not establish that either held disc was played on a particular station, or that the magazine features reviewed these exact releases.

Pulse X
01 · 2002 — contemporary sleeve stock sticker dated 22 August 2002

A record in circulation

The 2002 Pulse X white-label promo retains its Music Mob / Essential distribution sticker. The single-sided format and surviving label information make the object useful evidence of how a recording was identified and circulated, alongside its musical significance.

Dizzee Rascal — I Luv U
02 · 2002 (white-label circulation; exact date not established)

Before the commercial single

The DS-001 I Luv U white label preserves vocal and instrumental sides, handwritten identification and runout evidence. The catalogue distinguishes this 2002 pressing from the later XL commercial release. Its format invites comparison with Pulse X without treating the two releases as identical.

Naming a developing scene

Dazed’s April 2004 issue places an Eski/Grime feature naming Wiley, Kano, Tinchy Stryder and D Double E inside a fashion-led magazine. The juxtaposition is the evidence: music being presented alongside emerging designers and other creative practices.

The television connection

The March 2005 issue includes Grime Watch material on Channel U. Beside the two white labels, it opens a question about how records, television and print made music visible in different ways. Detailed article-page indexing remains a useful next step.
