Catalogue note

The 1,100th issue of Detective Comics, preserved here in the Dave Johnson 1:25 retailer-incentive Cover F state. The oversized anniversary anthology brings together Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín, Greg Rucka and Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Mariko Tamaki and Amancay Nahuelpan, and Dan Watters with Bill Sienkiewicz. This variant is especially resonant because Johnson is not an arbitrary guest cover artist: his earlier Detective Comics cover work was part of the body of work for which he received the 2002 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist. The physical reverse additionally preserves a contemporary DC High Volume: Batman weekly-podcast advertisement.

Writer: Tom Taylor · Greg Rucka · Mariko Tamaki · Dan Watters

Artist: Mikel Janín · Álvaro Martínez Bueno · Amancay Nahuelpan · Bill Sienkiewicz; colour credits include Giovanna Niro, Arif Prianto, Mikel Janín and Bill Sienkiewicz

Cover: Dave Johnson

Edition: Cover F · Dave Johnson 1:25 retailer-incentive card stock variant · original first printing

Why this object matters

Johnson’s established Detective Comics cover practice gives this anniversary variant a coherent artist relationship. The anthology content is substantive, but the 1:25 incentive does not make it culturally superior to the held Miller edition. Align their strong importance at 8.0.

Evidence limits: Front and reverse have been photographed. No missing issued component is reported, but the comic remains enclosed in its Collect Forever Soft Slab, so the interior has not been physically collated or page-counted.

Score and assessment method

Archive Importance: 8 / 10.

This is a curatorial judgement, not a measurement accurate to one tenth or a market valuation. Read the explanation and its evidence limits together.
