Catalogue note

i-D No. 308, The 30th Birthday Issue, Pre-Fall 2010, in the Naomi Campbell cover variant photographed by Nick Knight. The issue marks i-D’s thirtieth anniversary with the “Then / Now / Next” programme and a major 200 Portraits project: the supplied interior states that Nick Knight and SHOWstudio made approximately 200 portraits at Somerset House at the close of 2009, revisiting the magazine’s fifth-birthday portrait concept on a much larger scale. Naomi Campbell’s cover forms one of the issue’s three principal cover variants alongside Kate Moss and Lady Gaga. The issue documents i-D looking back across three decades while simultaneously mapping a turn-of-the-decade creative network across fashion, music, photography, art and design.

Why this object matters

The Knight/SHOWstudio portrait project makes this a substantial original photographic self-survey, rather than an anniversary number alone. Threshold Gold recognises the creative project preserved in the Campbell cover state. Its retrospective function places it below the formative i-D launch and issue-wide KAWS intervention; the copy is not all three cover variants.

Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
