This copy also retains an issue-specific black “35th birthday special edition” promotional band/strip. The issue functions as an institutional self-portrait of i-D at thirty-five and as a material record of the multi-cover, collector-oriented publishing strategies of its mid-2010s period.
Why this object matters
McLellan's issue-wide photographic authorship and surviving birthday band preserve a substantial editorial and material package. This is outstanding self-documentation, calibrated with the guest-edited Deyn project and other complete anniversary packages. Neither the eighteen-cover programme nor the thirty-fifth birthday alone warrants Gold for the held Dunn variant.
