Catalogue note

Large illustrated A2 poster for New Jack City at Bagleys Studio, King's Cross, Friday 25 November 1994, 10pm–6am. The poster advertises “First Time Ever in the U.K. Battle of the MC's — 4 to Go Hard Way” and presents a comic-book/gangster-city visual language closely tied to the New Jack City name. Printed DJ information includes Funky Flirt, Brockie, Randall, Devious D, DJ and DJ Ron, with the event centred on MC competition/performance. A small artist signature dated 1994 survives at lower right but remains unresolved. The poster is a strong material document of London jungle culture, MC-centred rave promotion and Bagleys at the point when jungle was consolidating a distinct visual and performance identity.

Advertised programme: A small hand-rendered/printed artist signature is visibly present at lower right of the illustration immediately above the printed date. Close inspection suggests a stacked mark approximately reading “NEFA” with “94”, but the lettering is not sufficiently unambiguous to resolve a permanent artist identity. Web research located exact-event archival references but no authoritative source identifying this signature or illustrator. The mark is visible, but the artist’s identity remains unresolved.

Historical context: Specialist flyer-collection evidence independently lists “new jack city, bagleys - 25/11/1994” as a poster-format object, corroborating the event/date/venue combination visible on this copy. Dazed’s 2014 feature on classic jungle flyers describes New Jack City as one of the notable/legendary nights represented in the Rave Archive and discusses jungle flyers as records of a scene in which MCs moved to the forefront. Bagleys itself was a major King's Cross warehouse club. The poster’s “Battle of the MC's” wording is therefore particularly useful evidence of that MC-centred strand of mid-1990s jungle culture.

Condition note: The illustrated face retains strong colour and excellent image/information survival despite substantial fold history. Horizontal fold crosses the central artwork; vertical centre fold and multiple secondary creases are visible. Edge wear is strongest along the top and side margins. Blank reverse shows the fold network and handling impressions clearly.

Event details are drawn from the held object and the qualified catalogue research above. A printed bill establishes an advertised booking, not confirmation that a performer appeared.

Why this object matters

The large illustrated MC-battle poster is outstanding evidence of jungle's performance hierarchy and comic/gangster imagery. The artist's unresolved signature preserves a research question, not an established career or provenance premium. Compare with the more fully documented Soundclash competition and belt object; remove the former high Gold claim.

Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
