Event
Moving Shadow presents Voodoo Magic — the inaugural/No. 1 club night, Bank Holiday Sunday 29 May 1994
Promoter
Moving Shadow — original 1990 UK breakbeat/jungle record label, led by Rob Playford. Label's direct first-party history describes Voodoo Magic as its first 1994 club-event project, with Andrew/Steve Lyall at associated Section 5 Records as assistants. Their individual names are independently sourced historical context, not printed personnel credits.
Venue
Equinox nightclub, Leicester Square
Location
Leicester Square, London, next to the Empire Cinema (as originally printed). Pirate radio announcement identifies London WC2H; label founder retrospectively locates Equinox directly under the Empire cinema. Preserve 'next to' physical text and 'below' firsthand recollection without treating them as contradictory legally established building addresses.
Advertised hours
Bank Holiday Sunday 29 May 1994 from 10pm until Monday 30 May 8am, ten hours advertised; no individual DJ/PA set times on physical flyer.
Original admission / price
Tickets only £10 IN ADVANCE. Other ticket outlets are subject to £1 booking fee, with an explicit NO BOOKING FEE exception at Section 5 Records. Equinox box office accepted credit cards. No printed door price, and no modern collectible valuation is inferred.
Designer
Sean — VERIFIED first-name-only credit printed at bottom right of front: 'Flyer Design - Sean - 0860 165498'. Surname, professional identity and connection (if any) to Moving Shadow producer Sean O'Keeffe (Deep Blue) NOT verified. Do not assert same person or merge design credit with performer authority.
Format
Original double-sided rectangular single-sheet Voodoo Magic event handbill with vivid full-colour landscape wand/stars graphic face and blue/cream multi-colour vertically read original programme/ticket-agent reverse. Both complete original faces supplied. Exact paper size unmeasured.
Dimensions
Not physically measured by owner. An external 1994 Voodoo Magic sales description uses A4, but this is not a specimen measurement and does not establish edition-size or printing state.
Orientation
Landscape full-colour front with wand angled across red/purple/blue field; portrait-reading reverse with bold Voodoo Magic heading, artist boxes and extensive UK independent record-shop agents.
Original / reproduction
Photographically period-consistent with an original 1994 double-sided labelled event flyer; rare depth of primary contemporary corroboration from label's own inaugural flyer archive, dated 28 May pirate-radio advert and Simon Reynolds firsthand review. The individual physical printing/impression, print run and subsequent reproduction status are unverified.
Edition / variant
Specifically 29 May 1994 inaugural 'Voodoo Magic 1' graphic: wand bearing MOVING SHADOW text in a purple-red starburst, huge hot-pink Voodoo Magic front text and printed flyer-design Sean credit, reverse nine DJs plus 3 live PAs and 3 MCs, £10 advance. NOT later Voodoo Magic events in August 1994, Christmas 1995 or May 1995 Mayday Blitz.
Condition
Good to Very Good, photographic provisional grade; colourful printing intact with a visible historic centre fold/crease, slight edge and corner rub and light surface handling.
Completeness
Apparently complete original double-sided promotional sheet with full artwork/Sean credit face and date/lineup/ticketing-agent reverse, including the Section 5 no-fee note. No separately attached ticket, membership form, programme inset or missing supplement evidenced.
Absolute rarity
Unknown: first event in a series does NOT prove a flyer first impression or scarce surviving copy. Original print quantities, numbered editions, surviving census and copy-specific print authentication unavailable.

Catalogue note

Original double-sided Moving Shadow Voodoo Magic flyer advertising its FIRST ever club night at Equinox, Leicester Square, London, Bank Holiday Sunday 29 May 1994, 10pm–8am. Its magenta-purple wand-and-stars graphics are expressly credited to 'Sean' as flyer designer, with no proven surname. Nine jungle/hardcore DJs including LTJ Bukem, Andy C, Grooverider, Randall, Ray Keith and Brockie share an event with live PAs by the important Moving Shadow acts Foul Play, Deep Blue and Omni Trio, plus MCs Flux, GQ and Five O. The reverse gives £10 advance tickets, Section 5 Records' fee exemption and independent record-shop agents. The event's exceptional documentary trail combines a surviving original Kool FM advertisement on 28 May, Simon Reynolds's contemporaneous Melody Maker eyewitness review and label boss Rob Playford's first-person recollections, securely establishing this inaugural Moving Shadow event's cultural importance.

Advertised programme: STARRING — NINE printed DJs: LTJ BUKEM; RANDALL; DJ RON; GROOVE RIDER; TANGO; RAY KEITH; MICKEY FINN; ANDY C; BROCKIE. LIVE PA'S BY: FOUL PLAY; DEEP BLUE; OMNI TRIO. MCs: MC FLUX; MC GQ; MC FIVE O. One main advertised bill without area divisions or DJ timings. All are printed and reported period acts; Simon Reynolds's original review corroborates some performances, but no blanket certainty every set happened exactly as billed. Original MICKEY FINN links well-used Micky Finn, GROOVE RIDER Grooverider, TANGO DJ Tango, BROCKIE established Brockie, and MC GQ established MC GQ.

Graphic-design significance: Striking 1994 London label-event brand system: enormous red-and-cream playful VOODOO MAGIC lettering and vertical MOVING SHADOW 'present...' language across a saturated purple/magenta/cyan abstract music/clock or logo pattern. A huge metallic grey-and-black magic wand projecting from upper right to lower left, with white stars swirling from its tip, literalises the event's magic concept. The reverse contrasts chunky cream lettering on dark blue and differentiated artist/PA/MC strips with period record-shop ticket network. Maker 'Sean' directly credited, with only first name verified; do not silently identify him as Deep Blue/Sean O'Keeffe despite the matching name and label involvement.

Historical context: Moving Shadow, founded in 1990 and led by Rob Playford, inaugurated its Voodoo Magic event series at Equinox, Leicester Square, on Sunday 29 May 1994, 10pm–8am. Nine headline DJs and three groundbreaking early jungle live PAs (Foul Play, Deep Blue, Omni Trio) were advertised, with MC Flux, GQ and Five O. A preserved Kool FM jungle pirate-radio tape recorded on 28 May 1994 contains the advance Voodoo Magic commercial at 18:38; separately, Simon Reynolds's 1994 Melody Maker eyewitness review describes Moving Shadow's atmospheric/breakbeat aesthetic, Equinox's interior and the DJ/PA roster. His archive labels the review 'May 1994' and separately 'Spring 1994'; the precise original issue date is not independently checked. In the first-party Moving Shadow website Rob Playford personally recalls Bukem's 'Horizons' being played around 1am and the venue turning up the system after the Empire cinema above had closed. This is a valuable attributed reminiscence, not a verified first-ever performance or authenticated sound engineer's log. The label says Lyall twins from its Section 5 shop helped run the new nights, and the physical sheet offers £10 advance entry, £1 agency booking fee except no fee at Section 5 shop, an unusual economical label-fan policy. This is a rare triangulation of original print, period radio and contemporary eyewitness criticism around the founding moment of an influential record-label club series.

Production note: Colourful pink-red/purple/blue geometric and translucent logo/wave-like composition with giant grey magical wand/spotlight and white stars on front, high-contrast blue/gold-red and white typography with ticket-agency lists on reverse. Original process, finish and stock unknown.

Condition note: The printed front retains vivid magenta, crimson, violet and cyan tones and an intact wand/white star composition; a visible transverse old fold running through the design (with corresponding line on the back), fine paper handling creases at centre, some softened corners and minor surface/edge scuffing. The reverse's blue performance blocks, 1994 date and small ticket retailers remain legible, with mild edge wear and no obvious major tear, missing corner, adhesive residue or large staining. Physical size, paper type, potential restoration and hidden condition cannot be graded from photographs alone.

Confidence / uncertainty: The event DATE and 10pm–8am plus all original nine DJs, three live PAs, MCs, £10 advance price, £1 agency fee, Section 5 no-fee exception and designer first name 'Sean' are all physically printed. The original says Equinox 'Next to the Empire Cinema'; founder later says 'directly above venue' in relation to Empire theatre, retain both vantage descriptions. The first-party label archive clearly names it 'Voodoo Magic 1'. Simon Reynolds's eyewitness review independent of the label establishes real event occurrence and references its first-person musical atmosphere, unlike merely unverified booked appearances. Foul Play is a group; Deep Blue=Sean O'Keeffe and Omni Trio=Rob Haigh by official primary label catalogue, but the flyer designer 'Sean' is not automatically O'Keeffe. Unknown MC Flux legal identity retained as billing. No assumed exact PA repertoire or attendee count.
