Catalogue note

Original double-sided UK Jungle flyer for The Designer Label Ball — Versace Edition, Easter Saturday 15 April 1995, 10pm–all night. The front adopts a luxury-fashion visual language with a large Medusa-style medallion; the reverse explicitly dedicates the event to “fashion conscious Jungle Ravers” and encourages casual designer wear. Two jungle arenas advertise Grooverider, Red Ant, Pressure X, Brainkillers, Brockie, Devious D, DJ Daz, Flirt 4, Sparks, Randall, Digital, Gappa G, Swift and others, plus Razor Records crew and MCs including Shabba, Ragga Twins and MC Det. The flyer advertises 2,000 spaces, 35K surround sound, extensive visual production, free admission with the flyer before 11:30pm and a magnum of champagne for the best dressed. It forms an important earlier counterpart to TMR’s December 1995 UK Jungle Designer Label Ball.

Advertised programme: Two arenas: Grooverider; Red Ant; Pressure X; Brainkillers; Brockie; Devious D; DJ Daz; Flirt 4; Sparks; Too Hot To Handle; Randall; Digital; Gappa G; Swift; plus full Razor Records crew. MCs: Shabba; Shocking; Rema-Dee; Ragga Twins; MC Det. Every DJ confirmed.

Graphic-design significance: The restrained black/yellow front uses an oversized Medusa-style medallion and “Versace Edition” title to mimic luxury-fashion branding, while the reverse shifts to a dense rave-poster aesthetic with repeated medallions, colourful type, map, admission form and line-up. The object is valuable evidence of rave graphics appropriating the codes of luxury fashion without establishing any official Versace sponsorship or authorisation.

Historical context: The reverse describes the event as dedicated to “fashion conscious Jungle Ravers” and asks attendees to put on their “best casual designer wear”. It advertises only 2,000 spaces, two arenas of “Junglistic melodies”, a 35K surround-sound system, lighting, video screens, projections, stage dancers, lasers and other attractions. Crucially, the flyer itself functions as a promotional access mechanism: completed personal details could be supplied for admission, and it advertises free admission with the flyer before 11:30pm. A magnum of champagne is offered for the best dressed.

Condition note: Strong colour and excellent overall legibility. Visible handling includes historic horizontal fold/crease lines, edge and corner wear, surface scuffs and light scratches, minor local creasing and a more pronounced crease/wear area at the lower-right front corner. The reverse admission form appears uncompleted. No major printed information loss is apparent. Assessment is limited to the photographed sides.

Confidence / uncertainty: The title “Versace Edition” and Medusa-style imagery are physically verified as event branding, but no evidence on the flyer establishes official affiliation, licence or sponsorship by Versace; none is claimed. The exact venue name/address is not plainly printed and is not inferred from the small map beyond the promoter’s East London wording. The existing UK Jungle authority is reused from the later New Year’s Eve Designer Label Ball already in TMR.

Through the flyers

Explore the club-culture timeline to follow advertised dates, places and billed performers across the held flyers.

Event details are drawn from the held object and the qualified catalogue research above. A printed bill establishes an advertised booking, not confirmation that a performer appeared.

Why this object matters

The explicit designer-wear instructions, best-dressed reward and retained admission form make the Versace Edition exceptional evidence of fashion and status within jungle culture. Retain Gold above the later less focused Designer Label Ball. Branded imagery does not establish Versace sponsorship, and the unresolved venue prevents an invented location-based premium.

Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
