Original double-sided flyer for The Sanctuary’s own fifth-birthday event, The Birthday Bash, at Denbigh North Leisure Centre, Bletchley, Milton Keynes on 21 September 1996, 9pm–7am. The main arena deliberately assembles DJs identified with different promoters — Dougal/Hysteria, Swane/Dreamscape, Sy/Helter Skelter, Rap/Bush Doctor, Hixxy/Hysteria, Mickey Finn/Roast, Seduction/Hardcore Heaven, Grooverider/Metal Headz and Vibes/Hysteria — with separate jungle and happy-hardcore MCs.

Catalogue note

Original double-sided flyer for The Sanctuary’s own fifth-birthday event, The Birthday Bash, at Denbigh North Leisure Centre, Bletchley, Milton Keynes on 21 September 1996, 9pm–7am. The main arena deliberately assembles DJs identified with different promoters — Dougal/Hysteria, Swane/Dreamscape, Sy/Helter Skelter, Rap/Bush Doctor, Hixxy/Hysteria, Mickey Finn/Roast, Seduction/Hardcore Heaven, Grooverider/Metal Headz and Vibes/Hysteria — with separate jungle and happy-hardcore MCs. The reverse thanks the promoters who had used The Sanctuary over the previous four years and prints an extensive roll-call of rave organisations, effectively turning the flyer into a contemporary venue history. An alternative room sponsored by Vibe Records broadens the programme into hard/uplifting house and garage.

Advertised programme: Main Arena DJs: Dougal (Hysteria), Swane (Dreamscape), Sy (Helter Skelter), SS, Rap (Bush Dr.), Hixxy (Hysteria), Mickey Finn (Roast), Seduction (Hardcore Heaven), Grooverider (Metal Headz), Vibes (Hysteria). MCs Jungle: Juiceman, Skibadee, Shabba, Hooligan, Warren G, OJ. MCs Happy Hardcore: MC MC, Ribbs, Magika, Stixman, MC Live-Lee. Alternative Room sponsored by Vibe Records: Nicky C, Mark Casey, Alibi, Uncle Funk, Hallmark, Steve Gurley (Rogue Unit).

Graphic-design significance: The front turns the Sanctuary building itself into a birthday cake floating in space, complete with candles and “happy birthday Sanctuary” icing. The reverse repeats the cake as the central visual anchor while surrounding it with DJs explicitly tagged to major promoters/brands, visually making the venue the centre of a network of rave organisations.

Historical context: The reverse states that the event thanks promoters who had promoted all-night dance events at the Sanctuary over the previous four years and says the venue would not have been as successful without them. It then names promoters “past present and future,” including Amnesia House, Bush Doctor, Dance Planet, Dance Trance, Desert Storm, Deathrow Techno, Desire, DieHard, Dreamscape, Elevation, Evolution, Exposure, Fibre Optic, Hardcore Heaven, Helter Skelter, Hysteria, Jungle Fever, Life Utopia, Pure X, Quest, Raindance, Roast, Southern Style, Thunder and Joy, World Dance and others. This list is preserved as the Sanctuary’s own contemporary retrospective statement.

Condition note: Excellent colour and overall legibility. Visible handling includes historic fold/crease lines, light edge and corner wear, minor surface scuffing and local small creases. The sheet remains substantially intact with no major printed information loss apparent. Assessment is limited to the photographed sides.

Confidence / uncertainty: The physical flyer clearly presents The Sanctuary itself as promoter/host of its Birthday Bash. No existing organisation authority for the venue was found, so a narrowly evidenced venue/promoter authority is proposed. The front says “Denbigh North Leisure Centre” whereas other Sanctuary material can use different venue formulations; this exact printed wording is preserved rather than normalised away. Printed “SKIBADEE” is preserved as printed without silently correcting historical spelling.

Event details are drawn from the held object and the qualified catalogue research above. A printed bill establishes an advertised booking, not confirmation that a performer appeared.

Why this object matters

The Sanctuary's own retrospective promoter roll-call is exceptional primary evidence linking much of the held rave network. The venue-authored birthday object merits Gold alongside other substantial organisational records. It is not a foundational recording or unique institutional archive, so 9.8 overstated its relative significance; the four-year thanks and fifth-birthday wording remain distinct printed statements.

Evidence limits: Venue self-history is attributed contemporary testimony. Fifth-birthday framing and thanks covering four years are preserved without forcing agreement.
