Catalogue note
Original folded 1994 Helter Skelter fifth-anniversary flyer for '5 Years in the Making — The Past, Present and the Future', 16 September 1994, The Sanctuary Warehouse, Milton Keynes, 9pm–7am. Its PEZ-illustrated cover and richly detailed outside back separately credit POPz with flyer design and computer graphics. Printed organiser retrospection commemorates five years and 39 prior parties; separately documented as Helter Skelter's 40th event. The £18+booking-fee tariff, press-endorsement excerpts and huge national ticket-agent directory preserve period rave economics. External original-event tape packs, video advertising and surviving online sets provide outstanding audiovisual links. Its physically folded interior is not yet photographed; actual inner artwork and DJ line-up await owner-original images.
Advertised programme: No individual performer roster visible on the two photographed OUTSIDE faces. The flyer identifies a separately credited 'inside illustration', and coloured interior printing appears at its folded edge, so its actual inside programme must be photographed before interpreting the original printed line-up or room assignments. A separate promoter-origin 40th-event tape-pack advertisement lists Volume 1 recorded DJs RAMOS, PIGBAG, VIBES, DJ RAP, HYPE, GROOVERIDER, DOUGAL, ELLIS DEE, FABIO, SWAN E, RANDALL, DJ SY; MC MAN PARRIS, MC GQ and RIBBZ, and Volume 2 techno DJs INTENSE, MARK EG, CLARKEE, BRISK, DAVE ANGEL, MACH-1, THE PRODUCER, AZTEK, THE MUSIC MAKER. These are externally sourced recorded-event marketing credits and are NOT asserted as printed on the provided original's unseen inside panels.
Graphic-design significance: Front combines monumental lowercase HELTER SKELTER cut-out/landscape typography, the atmospheric cloud-and-green swirling upper horizon, and a warm orange/gold multi-faced dream-figure composition reminiscent of visionary and fantasy painting. Front's lower strip repeats 1989–94 five-year title. Reverse contrasts a very dense black layout with multi-coloured publicity text, period reviews, bold gradient ticket panel and extensive national ticket-agent network. The original physically credits cover AND INSIDE illustration to PEZ and flyer design/computer graphics to POPz, enabling secure distinction of painterly/graphic roles. Unphotographed interior artwork must be documented before further interpretation.
Historical context: On Friday 16 September 1994 the promoter presented '5 Years in the Making — The Past, Present and the Future' at the Sanctuary Warehouse, 9pm–7am. Front states September 1989–September 1994; reverse thanks attendees of 39 parties over five years across the UK and publicises critics' quotations attributed to DJ Mag April 1994, Eternity May 1994 and Mixmag June 1994. These are promotional quotations printed by organisers, not independent re-examination of original published reviews. Specialist Borosix corroborates that the event marked Helter Skelter's fifth birthday and 40th rave under Dave and Penny Prattley. A separate Helter Skelter 40th-event recording sales sheet advertises DAT-recorded volume packs of DJs/MCs in the main warehouse and Technodrome, and an extensive live VHS featuring this night; these constitute external event-sound/film documentary relationships, not accessories to this paper copy. Multiple later specialist digital uploads/tape tracklists carry the date. The original sells tickets nationally from 4 Aug 1994 for £18 plus booking fee, warning against forgery and requiring over-18s; its own 'last event sold out two weeks in advance' is promotional testimony, not audited attendance.
Production note: Full-colour photographic/paint-like composite illustration and colour-filled type on black cover; full-colour dense ticket-agency typography on dark reverse; exact printing process, ink, stock and binding/folding manufacture not verified.
Condition note: Strong surviving pictorial colours on front with clear full title/date and artistic detail. Top-left front corner and upper edge have white scuffing/rub and small soft crease; slight right-edge handling and small chips. Reverse retains highly legible dense listings but shows notable whitening/rubbing at corners and the right outside folded edge, a visible shallow cross-edge crease/scuff near mid-height and light surface marks. Additional printed colours peek out at the closed front right edge. No catastrophic loss or large tear visible on exterior; internal paper condition, exact folds, paper weight and repairs remain uninspected.
Confidence / uncertainty: Date, venue, anniversary language, 39-event retrospective, £18+fee ticketing, promotional press quotes and exact maker credit PEZ/POPz physically verified. First-party recording merchandising says the night was the 40th event and was filmed; not evidence a VHS/tape is included in the object. There is a later 1995 event titled 'The Past Present and the Future' in audio archives; distinguish by 1994 5th birthday/date. This object appears folded with coloured interior artwork visible near right-hand edge, yet only front and outside reverse photographs are supplied: number of panels, inner illustrations and printed DJ bill unverified. Leave roster empty in event_programme and identify audio artists as external-only until the owner uploads interior. Form classification remains cautious.
