Catalogue note
A particularly important April 2004 Dazed & Confused issue whose cover combines Heather Marks, Laurie Bartley and Nicola Formichetti with Gareth Pugh’s Central Saint Martins graduate collection. Dazed later described putting Pugh’s graduate work on this cover as an unheard-of feat and an iconic early image of his career. The same issue also documents grime while the form was still consolidating its public identity, with an “Eski Beat Explosion” cover line and a “Young Guns of the Eski/Grime Wave” feature naming Wiley, Kano, Tinchy Stryder and D Double E. Further editorial material includes Hideshi Hino, Vashti Bunyan, Emma Cook, Shona Heath art direction, early Bloc Party coverage and The Knife. The object is therefore unusually strong as a record of simultaneous emergence across experimental British fashion, grime, independent music and visual culture.
Why this object matters
The graduate Pugh cover and early named grime survey document simultaneous emergence in British fashion and music. This specific original intersection retains Gold and merits 9.3; it is not simply an early issue featuring later-famous people.
Evidence limits: Complete under the standing TMR rule: all bound pages/components are present unless otherwise stated. No separately issued supplement, wrap, poster, disc or insert has been identified as missing from this copy.
