Catalogue note
September 1982 issue of The Face, No. 29, led by the fashion/social-history cover story 'Hard Times — Whatever Happened to the Zoot Suit?' and a substantial Northern Soul feature later circulated as 'A Primer for the New Soul Rebels'. The issue also contains Kevin Rowland, the video art of Nam June Paik, a Philip K. Dick feature, Julie Burchill, art and fashion material, and a rear-cover ABC 'All of My Heart' advertisement. It is an unusually rich early example of The Face connecting music scenes, clothes, art, media and youth identity within one editorial object.
Why this object matters
The substantial Northern Soul and zoot-suit histories connect music, dress and social identity, alongside Paik and Philip K. Dick. This unusually coherent original youth-culture research document warrants Gold at 9.0.
