Biography
Person.
Julie Burchill is an English journalist and author who entered music writing at full speed. She joined the New Musical Express in 1976 at seventeen, writing about punk with a voice that was funny, combative and impossible to confuse with anyone else’s.
She moved to The Face around its launch in 1980 and later wrote for The Sunday Times, The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian and other national publications. Her books range from memoir and criticism to the novels Ambition and Sugar Rush, while The Modern Review—co-founded in the 1990s—treated popular culture as something worth arguing about properly.
Agreement has never been the point of a Burchill column; energy, judgement and a memorable sentence usually are.
