i-D Fashion Magazine No. 1
Inaugural issue · first “Straight Up” · original pink/black 50p landscape fanzine
The inaugural issue of i-D is one of the foundational objects of modern British youth-culture publishing. Produced in an intentionally handmade, fanzine-like landscape format, it established the magazine’s street-level approach to fashion and includes the first “Straight Up” section: head-to-toe portraits documenting what people wore, where they bought it and how they described themselves.

Catalogue note
The inaugural issue of i-D is one of the foundational objects of modern British youth-culture publishing. Produced in an intentionally handmade, fanzine-like landscape format, it established the magazine’s street-level approach to fashion and includes the first “Straight Up” section: head-to-toe portraits documenting what people wore, where they bought it and how they described themselves. The copy preserves the original 50p cover, hand-made graphic language, editorial credits and Better Badges printing/distribution line. It marks the point at which i-D’s later global influence in fashion photography, styling, graphic design and youth culture began in material form.
Why this object matters
The original i-D launch and Straight Up format are foundational British street-style and graphic-publishing evidence. Retain Gold at 9.8; the unresolved 36/40-page discrepancy and uncollated copy make an absolute 10 unnecessary.
Evidence limits: Appears structurally intact from supplied front cover, rear cover and sampled interior views, but not page-by-page collated. The supplied contents page runs through page 36. Secondary descriptions conflict between 36 and 40 pages; the discrepancy is retained. No standard supplement or free gift has been established from the supplied evidence or research.
