Catalogue note

Original Neptune Promotions flyer for The Ultimate Event at Gatzby’s Nightclub, Station Approach, Reading, on Friday 15 May 1992. The advertised 'Wave Makers' are Jumping Jack Frost, DJ SS, Phantasy, Doc Scott, Mastersafe and DJ 4-Play, with a live P.A. by SL II and MCs Eze' Vibe and Marbles. The object is particularly evocative of spring 1992 because SL2's 'On a Ragga Tip' was sitting at No. 2 on the UK singles chart that same week, while the flyer remained rooted in the small-club infrastructure of hardcore rave. Its fantasy Neptune illustration and exact institutional counterpart at Northwestern give it strong visual and documentary value.

Advertised programme: Wave Makers: Jumpin' Jack Frost; DJ SS; Phantasy; Doc-Scott; Mastersafe; DJ 4-Play; plus guests. Live P.A.: SL II, advertised with 'Way in My Brain' and 'Ragga Tip'. MCs: MC Eze' Vibe and MC Marbles. Printed forms are preserved exactly; securely resolved names are linked to permanent authorities.

Graphic-design significance: The front abandons conventional line-up typography almost entirely in favour of a framed fantasy-seascape: a bare-breasted mermaid-like figure, sea creature/orca, severed or submerged head, fins and waves beneath the hand-drawn NEPTUNE title. The ornate fantasy illustration contrasts sharply with the reverse's functional blue event-information layout, producing a memorable split between escapist imagery and practical rave logistics.

Historical context: Northwestern University independently preserves the exact 15 May 1992 Neptune Promotions flyer. The same archive also documents Neptune Promotions co-promoting Strychnine Core at Starlite 2001 in Leicester on 21 February 1992, supporting Neptune as an active multi-event promoter rather than a one-off name. Gatzby's in Reading also appears in specialist flyer archives as a rave venue in June 1992. The night sits within the period when breakbeat hardcore was rapidly moving from underground clubs into the singles chart, illustrated most clearly here by SL2's advertised live appearance while 'On a Ragga Tip' was at No. 2.

Production note: Commercial full-colour front with blue monochrome reverse; exact printing process and stock not established from supplied photographs.

Condition note: Very Good appearance from supplied photographs. Front has light surface wear, modest edge/corner wear and a small area of wear/creasing at the upper-right corner. Reverse remains clean and highly legible with light handling and edge wear. No major tear, heavy staining or substantial paper loss is visible.

Confidence / uncertainty: The event title, Friday 15 May wording, venue, hours, ticket price, promoter address, line-up, live P.A., MCs and production claims are physically printed. The year 1992 is institutionally verified by Northwestern University. The faint front-artwork signature is not legible enough to attribute. Printed billing documents intended appearance, not proof that every advertised performer ultimately played.
