Spirit presents Brainbenders — April and May 1992
The Forum, Hatfield · Fridays 10 April & 22 May 1992 · Hype, Phantasy, Randall / Ratpack, Krome, Swann-E
10 April and 22 May 1992 (two separate advertised nights) · ★ Gold Star object
Original A4 owner-reported double-sided Spirit 'Brainbenders' flyer advertising two Friday all-night events (10 April and 22 May 1992, 9pm–6am) at The Forum, Lemsford Road, Hatfield. The instantly memorable full-colour cartoon image depicts a shocked floating face between giant veined green-black hands against a fiery orange-red sky and receding graphic grid; reverse preserves two discrete 'Sound Enforcers' lineups. April: DJ Hype, Phantasy, Randall, Ellis Dee, Rubberman, Smashup, DJ Bolino; May: Ratpack, DJ Krome, Swan-E (canonical Swann-E), Kenny Ken, Smashup, Rubberman, Stevie T. Advertised £11 advance (+ possible booking fee) or £15 door, ample venue detail/route diagram and striking 1992 sound/laser/club infrastructure claims. Existing TMR-000722 Spirit 2 at same Forum on 17 January 1992 is a distinct earlier event, not duplicate. A 10 April Randall set index independently corroborates 'Spirit Brainbenders' at The Forum though audio provenance unverified, and original Spirit series continues in 1992 specialist archives. Exact illustrator, print run and market value unknown.

- Spirit presents Brainbenders — Two All-Night Raves
- Promoter
- Spirit, reusing established TMR 'spirit-rave-promotions' authority. Spirit 2 — The Next Generation at the same Hatfield Forum on 17 January 1992 already catalogued TMR-000722. Historic collector guide also lists Spirit Between Two Worlds (Forum) on 28 March 1992 and a separate 14 May 1992 Spirit event, while Phatmedia documents a later 24 July 1992 Spirit event in Hemel Hempstead. These provide promoter context; do not treat as original Brainbenders night or related printed issue.
- Venue
- The Forum (Hatfield)
- Location
- The Forum, Lemsford Road, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, J3 off A1(M) as printed. Original reverse includes a route diagram near Hatfield Galleria; no unprinted postcode or modern venue equivalence established.
- Advertised hours
- Both nights 9pm–6am next morning: Friday 10 to Saturday 11 April 1992 and Friday 22 to Saturday 23 May 1992.
- Original admission / price
- Original reverse states 'THE SCORE! TICKETS IN ADVANCE £11.00 (+ POSSIBLE BOOKING FEE)' and 'TAX ON THE DOOR: £15.00' (literal original wording). Interpreted as advertised £15 door-entry charge, NOT an independently established statutory tax; possible advance booking fee is unspecified. Forum box office lists 'NO BOOKING FEE'. Original named Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and London record-shop agents and old phone lines preserved in full source views. No tickets included.
- Designer
- Unknown. Neither supplied face identifies a designer/illustrator; Phatmedia credits 'Drew' for an entirely different 24 July 1992 Spirit flyer, which is NOT safely transferable to this April/May Brainbenders issue.
- Format
- One original owner-reported A4 paper promotional sheet, double-sided, illustrated portrait front and landscape programme reverse. Printed front unifies two dates under same Spirit/Brainbenders image, while reverse places April and May programmes in distinct pink/red 'Sound Enforcers' columns separated by venue/address, a mini road map and admission. Two dates on one physical original, not two separate physical posters or repeated copies.
- Dimensions
- Owner reports default A4 nominal 210 × 297 mm; this particular original sheet not independently measured. No enlarged promotional poster variant or different print run proved.
- Orientation
- Portrait illustrated front and landscape reverse (rotated ninety degrees in photographs); not a multipanel brochure.
- Original / reproduction
- High-confidence original 1992 advertising paper from full owner front and reverse, exact event-specific printed date and 1992-period dealer listings/physical wear. Other same-night historic tape archives and Spirit event listings independently support contemporaneous activity. Original printer, first impression, print run, material chain-of-custody and later reproduction history unknown.
- Edition / variant
- Spirit Brainbenders original April 10 and May 22, 1992 dual-date programme at The Forum, Hatfield, cartoon floating face/hands on fiery psychedelic rainbow and perspective grid. The January 17 Spirit 2 at TMR-000722 is a DIFFERENT event and printed flyer, not an issue-level duplicate. No evidence of alternative artwork/date/copy states.
- Condition
- Good apparent original condition (provisional ungraded photographic assessment); clear fold and mild handling wear.
- Completeness
- One apparently complete original double-sided A4-format poster/flyer with both the full psychedelic cover and the full April/May two-event programme reverse. Neither dated billing is a missing insert or separate printed sheet. No removable coupon, ticket or other extra evidenced.

A 10 April Randall set index independently corroborates 'Spirit Brainbenders' at The Forum though audio provenance unverified, and original Spirit series continues in 1992 specialist archives. Exact illustrator, print run and market value unknown.
Advertised programme: FRIDAY 10 APRIL 1992, 'SOUND ENFORCERS': DJ Hype, Phantasy, Randall, Ellis Dee, Rubberman, Smashup, DJ Bolino. FRIDAY 22 MAY 1992, 'SOUND ENFORCERS': Ratpack, DJ Krome, Swan-E (existing Swann-E), Kenny Ken, Smashup, Rubberman, Stevie T. Both 9pm–6am. The names are original advertised lineups; no specific confirmed actual appearances, MC names, or set timings.
Graphic-design significance: A bold and eccentric early rave illustration unlike common photomontage/event-type promotions. Cartoon suspended startled human head with spiky red hair/pale face and huge blue irises is squeezed between oversized organically veined green-black hands under a molten red/yellow sky, rainbow ribbons and floating coloured orbs; foreground uses a contrasting futuristic receding cyan grid with dimensional pink Spirit/Brainbenders lettering. Small floating Spirit mascot at top adds character. The reverse is economical but legible 1992 information architecture: mirror-image pink artist panels, huge 9.00/6.00 numerals, central circular DJ/cartoon mascot, Hatfield location/address and schematic map, £11 versus £15 tariff, regional ticket outlet grid and extensive sound/lighting claims. Art is uncredited and visually different from a later 'Drew'-credited Spirit flyer; no automatic maker attribution.
Historical context: Spirit was an early-1990s Hertfordshire rave organiser already represented in TMR by 17 Jan 1992 Spirit 2 — The Next Generation at Hatfield Forum (TMR-000722). This original two-event programme documents expansion by 10 April and 22 May 1992, with distinct musical lineups and repeated artists Smashup and Rubberman, illustrating resident/returning bookings. A specialist historical Randall tape tracklist explicitly identifies 'Spirit Brainbenders @ The Forum, Hatfield 10/04/1992' and another collectors' music-index records Randall at Spirit Forum on that date; original tape provenance and stage attendance unconfirmed. Other period Spirit flyers in UK Rave Flyers price guide identify 28 March and 14 May 1992 events; Phatmedia independently archives a later 24 July Spirit event at Hemel Hempstead. The April bill features DJ Hype, Phantasy, Randall, Ellis Dee, while May advertises Ratpack, DJ Krome, Swann-E and Kenny Ken. DJ Krome was an important part of 1992 hardcore recording project Krome & Time on Suburban Base, independently confirmed by the original label's artist interview, but the original print bills the DJ individually. Sound/laser claims including 15K JBL sub-bass and seven-colour five-watt water-cooled laser are period promoter promises. £11 advance vs £15 door, original retailer/agent network, over-18 rule and security notices document the economics and rules of weekly regional venue raves.
Production note: Full-colour psychedelic illustration front; black/pink/red text and outlined graphics on white on reverse. Exact printmaking technique, paper weight/stock, printing plant and printer not documented.
Condition note: Colour front remains vivid and substantially intact, but a prominent horizontal fold line traverses the lower half of the illustrated head/hands composition; in landscape reverse it corresponds to a vertical fold/crease down central venue/map area. The fold has local fine whitening/ink rubbing. Marginal/corner bumps and slight curling, superficial scuffs, isolated pale abrasions/speckling in dark sky and black ground, plus softening along upper/side edges. Reverse has paper waviness, slight local faint marks and fold intersections; all billing and pricing remains legible. No major detached sections, large missing portions or severe tear obvious. Exact fibre breaks, repairs, print fading and measurements require in-hand inspection.
Confidence / uncertainty: Physically verified exactly two dates, each unique advertised DJs, original brand Spirit/Brainbenders, The Forum/Hatfield address and 9pm–6am, £11 plus possible booking fee and printed 'TAX ON THE DOOR £15' wording, planned equipment, conditions of entry and condition. The £15 is billed as door price, not tax law. Historic Randall set attribution supports April Spirit Brainbenders title/date but not every act's appearance. Ratpack mapped existing band/duo 'ratpack-uk' organisation rather than a person; printed Swan-E safely links to established 'Swann-E' People, not dormant duplicate alias. Phantasy uses active established authority, not separate duplicate Phantasy person. DJ Krome is a known Krome & Time artist, but the duo itself is not automatically said to have played; propose one cautiously supported DJ person authority. Rubberman, Smashup, DJ Bolino, Stevie T not externally disambiguated; preserve spellings without guessing identities. The original cartoon designer is unknown and July 1992 'Drew' art credit does not apply automatically. No print runs, verified rare edition, audience numbers, exact paper dimensions, appearance confirmations or financial valuation inferred.
