Biography
Person.
David Toop is a British musician, writer, curator and sound thinker whose career has treated listening as a way of understanding culture rather than simply a route into music criticism. His books include Rap Attack, Ocean of Sound, Sinister Resonance and Into the Maelstrom, works that move across hip-hop, ambient music, improvisation, electronic sound and the social meanings attached to listening.
Alongside writing, Toop has maintained an active practice as a musician and curator and became Emeritus Professor at University of the Arts London. His approach is deliberately porous: popular music, experimental sound, technology, memory and visual culture are allowed to inform one another rather than being confined to specialist categories.
