Catalogue note
August 1983 issue of The Face, No. 40, centred on an extended Elvis Costello interview under the cover line 'Man Out of Time'. The contents place Costello alongside Shalamar, Joseph Beuys, Cabaret Voltaire, Curtis Mayfield, Jeff Banks and Tony Parsons, combining pop, post-industrial music, art, fashion and social reportage. The issue is also notable as a strong surviving example of Neville Brody-era editorial design; a documented Joseph Beuys interior spread from this exact issue has been used in graphic-design history as an example of Brody's symbol system and page architecture. The rear cover carries a contemporary advertisement for Big Country's debut album The Crossing, itself entering the UK chart in August 1983.
Why this object matters
The Beuys spread from this exact issue is documented in design-history analysis of Brody’s page system. Combined with the original music/art editorial context, that identifiable interior design significance supports Gold at 9.0.
