Catalogue note

Eagle #423 marks the 28 April 1990 makeover of the long-running 1982 revival into “The New Eagle.” The physical editorial openly frames it as a new beginning while simultaneously celebrating the original Eagle’s April 1950 launch and 40th anniversary. The redesign brought glossier paper, more colour and a reduced slate of five longer strips, including new instalments of Dan Dare, Computer Warrior, Mutants, Ghostworld and Dark Angels. This copy retains the original free Dan Dare badge and also preserves the issue’s crossover into contemporary youth/pop culture through a New Kids on the Block cover callout and full-page pin-up.

Writer: Tom Tully · John Wagner · David Robinson · James Nicholas

Artist: David Pugh · Mike Dorey · Alan Burrows · Eric Bradbury · Francisco Solano López

Cover: David Pugh — Dan Dare cover

Edition: Standard UK newsstand edition; first issue of the 1990 “The New Eagle” makeover; original free Dan Dare badge still attached.

Why this object matters

The 1990 New Eagle makeover and retained attached Dan Dare badge make an outstanding document of British youth publishing adapting its format and pop-cultural reach. This is a relaunch of the 1982 revival, not the foundational 1950 Eagle. The specific redesign and premium support 8.8, with Gold removed.

Evidence limits: No new physical inspection or collation was performed. Copy-specific conclusions remain limited to the retained catalogue and accession evidence.
