Cryptonite — Fluid Motion (8 November 1991)

Mildenhall Speedway Stadium, Suffolk · Carl Cox / Jumping Jack Frost / Fabio / Grooverider · two arenas · 85K Martin Audio F2

Friday 8 November 1991 · 9pm–8am (year independently verified) · ★ Gold Star object

Original double-sided Cryptonite Fluid Motion flyer for Friday 8 November 1991 at Mildenhall Speedway Stadium in Suffolk, described in print as 'Nr. Cambridge'. The striking electric blue/pink horned creature illustration fronts two nine-position arena programmes with major early hardcore/house DJs including Carl Cox, Jumping Jack Frost, Fabio, DJ Seduction, Grooverider, Ellis Dee, Stu Allan, Slipmatt, Randall and DJ SS. The reverse advertises an 85K Martin Audio F2 sound system, two heated marquees, fairground, lasers and pyrotechnics, £25 admission including booking fee, and a claimed 7,500 licensed capacity. Contemporary October 1991 Ravescene issue one independently advertised the exact date, and an externally catalogued Fabio/JJ Frost recording is attributed to the night. This is an early sequence companion to the separately submitted Cryptonite Peterborough 1992 flyer already in TMR intake.

Catalogue note

Advertised programme: ARENA 1: CARL COX; JUMPIN JACK FROST; FABIO; SWAN E; DJ SEDUCTION; SIMON BASSLINE SMITH; SHAGGY & BREEZE; DEVIOUS D; DJ UNITY. ARENA 2: GROOVE RIDER; ELLIS DEE; KENNY KEN; STU ALLAN; SLIPMATT; BINNI; DJ RANDALL; DJ SS; THE DOCTOR. Eighteen distinct printed programme positions across two areas, including one SHAGGY & BREEZE duo name. No MC line-up or DJ set times stated. Original names preserved without assuming BINNI or THE DOCTOR identities or conflating the duo with unrelated artists. Advertised appearances, not confirmed completed performances.

Graphic-design significance: A particularly vivid early-1990s fantasy/sci-fi cover: metallic saturated electric blue and magenta alien/ram-horned humanoid rising within luminous serpent-shaped arcs and receding purple geometric grid. Deep black ground and red vertically arranged Cryptonite title contrast with hand-lettered Fluid Motion in silver/blue. Reverse is functional bold typography in green and red, dividing 18 billed positions between Arena One and Arena Two, alongside box advertisements for lasers, heated marquees and ticket outlets. A small mark near the left foot is not reliably legible as a signed name.

Historical context: Specialist source chronology documents two Mildenhall Cryptonite events in 1991: Substance Unknown (31 August) and Fluid Motion (8 November), followed by Such a Feeling in Cornwall and Peterborough in 1992 and A Quantum Leap at the Sanctuary in 1993. The first issue of Ravescene Magazeen, published approximately 25 October 1991, independently advertised this exact Fluid Motion show on November 8 at Mildenhall Speedway Stadium. Arena One's stated DJs include Carl Cox, Jumpin Jack Frost, Fabio, Swan E, DJ Seduction, Simon Bassline Smith, Shaggy & Breeze, Devious D and DJ Unity; Arena Two gives Groove Rider, Ellis Dee, Kenny Ken, Stu Allan, Slipmatt, Binni, DJ Randall, DJ SS and The Doctor. In November 1991 those names encompass house and breakbeat/hardcore circuits before jungle's later musical identity was consolidated. The original reverse advertises 85K Martin Audio F2, two heated marquees, free fairground, two 25W multicolour lasers, pyrotechnics, projections and strobing: all original promoter claims, not verified outcomes. A 2019 tuneID thread links a Fabio/JJ Frost recording and alleged eyewitness video clips from the exact event, but original tape/film custody and performance completeness remain unverified. The earlier in-session 1992 Cryptonite Peterborough flyer explicitly recalls Mildenhall-era productions, connecting the physical archive across time.

Production note: Multi-colour airbrush-like illustration with vibrant blue/pink gradients and dark background; contrasting green/red/yellow reverse typography and printed dealer/agent lists. Exact process, ink, stock and production quantities unknown.

Condition note: Front blue and pink colours remain strong, with an old horizontal fold line through lower-central illustrated figure, scattered tiny white marks in dark printed areas, upper-edge and corner softening and mild paper rubs. Rotated landscape reverse shows corresponding vertical central crease through red CRYPTONITE wording and across advertising text, minor paper edge wear and age handling, but the small ticket-agent directory and both original DJ columns remain readable. No large through tear, missing section or major stain evident from the two supplied photographs. Exact paper stock, hidden repairs, measured size and conservation stability unverified.

Confidence / uncertainty: Original flyer prints exact weekday/day/month and venue, but NOT 1991; year verified using contemporary Oct 1991 Ravescene and specialist collector chronology. Mildenhall stadium's actual site in Suffolk is independently verified; original 'Nr Cambridge' preserved. Arena One original variant 'SWAN E' linked to main Swann-E, 'JUMPIN JACK FROST' to Jumping Jack Frost; Arena Two 'GROOVE RIDER' to Grooverider; both variant forms transcribed literally. SHAGGY & BREEZE is a duo credit, not the reggae-pop artist Shaggy. Binni and The Doctor identities unresolved, not assumed Doc Scott. No actual event DJ slots or MCs stated, and 7,500 licensing capacity is a printed claim.
