Catalogue note
December 1983 issue of The Face, No. 44, with John Lydon on the Steve Pyke-photographed cover under the line 'Situation Vacant — Stand Down Johnny Lydon'. Inside, the issue combines a substantial Lydon feature with The Face Interview with Mick Jagger, Aztec Camera/Roddy Frame, playwright and filmmaker Mike Leigh, Julie Burchill, Jay Strongman's nightlife coverage and a broad fashion package including 'Eight for ’84', 'Worlds End in Paris', 'Clash of the Tartans' and further reporting on European style and media. The contents spread itself is unusually revealing: alongside the masthead it reproduces a coordinated set of European magazine covers and a photograph of Dutch pirate television station Luna TV, reinforcing The Face's active interest in transnational youth-media networks. The rear cover preserves a contemporary ABC 'Beauty Stab' advertisement. As a late-1983 issue it records The Face operating simultaneously as music magazine, fashion laboratory, design object and survey of emerging European youth culture.
Why this object matters
The European magazine covers and pirate-television image make the contents spread primary evidence of transnational youth-media interest. Together with Pyke’s Lydon image and fashion reporting, this sustains outstanding 8.8 importance.
